Co-Creating a Nurse Retention Framework for Hospital Sustainability in Manitoba

Purpose

The Nurse Retention Workshop brought together nurse leaders, frontline nurses, educators, researchers, healthcare administrators, and policy stakeholders to:

  • Foster dialogue on the key factors contributing to the nursing shortage and challenges affecting nurse retention.

  • Build consensus on priority interventions to strengthen nurse retention across Manitoba.

  • Identify a priority intervention to inform the development of a nurse retention pilot project.

Key Findings

Participants identified several priorities for improving nurse retention, including:

  • Supportive and visible leadership

  • Safe staffing and flexible scheduling

  • Mentorship and professional development

  • Open communication and meaningful recognition

  • Safe, respectful, and psychologically healthy workplaces

  • Sustainable recruitment and transition supports

Impact

The findings will guide the development of practical recommendations and future initiatives to strengthen nursing leadership, improve workplace environments, and support high-quality patient care across Manitoba.
