Purpose

To explore how infection prevention and control (IPAC) measures introduced during and after the COVID-19 pandemic have affected person-centred care in long-term care homes across Canada, and identify ways to balance resident safety with quality of life.

Key Findings

• IPAC measures have helped protect residents from infectious diseases but have also impacted social connection, autonomy, and overall well-being.

• Residents, family caregivers, and healthcare providers experience ethical challenges when balancing infection prevention with person-centred care.

• Interviews with key stakeholders are identifying practical strategies to support both resident safety and meaningful, compassionate care.

Impact

The findings will inform recommendations for long-term care policies and practices that better integrate infection prevention with person-centred care. The project aims to support the health and well-being of residents, family caregivers, and healthcare providers while contributing to more equitable and sustainable long-term care across Canada.
